Life with dogs

Growing up in the North East, our family pet was a rescue cross breed, a real Heinz 57 varieties sort of dog.  As a young lad I spent the majority of my time out in the countryside with her, and it was where I was at my happiest.

She led a long and active outdoor life, living to the ripe age of 19. This gave me a real appreciation of just how important exercise and activity is to a dog's wellbeing.

Over the years I've gained lots of practical experience with all sorts of dogs, including a number of rescues. I even planned to bring a rescued stray back to the UK from Former Yugoslavia when I was serving there in the mid 90's. Sadly, she didn't make it, but this sparked my passion for animal welfare and to consider it as a future career path.

I currently have a Terrier, and they say if you can train a terrier, you can train anything!

Work with Dogs

I was lucky enough while serving the the army to complete the All Arms Patrol Dog Handling course and gained experience working with military dogs, mostly GSDs.

After leaving the forces, I realised that I wanted to work with animals, and went on to work for the PDSA as a veterinary nurse auxiliary for two years. This was always seen as a stepping stone, to gain relevant experience, as I really wanted to become an RSPCA inspector. Despite being shortlisted from 2000+ applicants on two occasions, it wasn't to be (maybe my animal skills were better than my people skills). But that desire to work with animals, and specifically dogs, has always remained.

I'm currently studying to gain qualifications in Dog training and behaviour, although I believe qualification is nothing without experience.
